IDEM is a project that intended to demonstrate how the installation of an innovative monitoring system of odour air emissions in risky contexts (landfills, composting plants, farms) could actually contribute to improve the environmental conditions, the well-being of the population and the general performances of organizations causing odour air emissions.
In IDEM the geomatics group of the Politecnico di Torino integrates the system with the local updating of the maps, as a support for analysis and processing. For this aim, a procedure was tested using photogrammetric surveys from UAV (Unmanned Aerial Systems) and the integration of the results in existing maps.
Moreover, mobile sensors measuring pollution values (developed by another group of PoliTO) were mounted on bikes and mapped for extracting information about air quality (in form of pollution maps or local data).
The resulted data were archived in a standard-based GIS, for which a specific data model about air quality was realized starting from INSPIRE data model and integrating it with other standards and ontologies about the touched fields (urban and landscape environment, air quality, etc.).
The GIS were used for:
- real time application of sensor measurements;
- Geospatial data analysis of environmental phenomenon;
- Data sharing between project partners;
- Communication and dissemination in form of webGIS (http://demo.ithacaweb.org/idem/home.html).
