Title:

Visual Navigation for Rendezvous and Docking using PMD Camera

Abstract: There is one common problem of satellites which quite widely discussed: the lifespan. An idea to extend operational lifespan of a satellite in orbit, instead of replacing it by a new one, is concluded in On-Orbit Servicing (OOS) projects. The typical scenario of OOS is safe and reliable Rendezvous and Docking (RvD) of the approaching chaser to the target and taking over attitude control. In this paper relative navigation using new product Photonic Mixer Device (PMD), as new sort of the 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor, is suggested and of great interest, because the PMD sensor has never been used in space environment before. For optical navigation based on using a PMD camera, the following tasks and challenges have to be considered: initial pose estimation with a subsequent real-time object tracking, extension of the measurement range of the PMD sensor, camera calibration, performance measurements with a RvD simulation facility like EPOS 2.0 (European Proximity Operations Simulator). This paper mainly focuses on the first objective, namely pose estimation with a PMD sensor. Before calculating the pose estimate, the problem of actually finding target must be solved. The model based matching algorithm is proposed in this paper for 3D target acquisition and estimation of 6 degrees of freedom (3D position and 3D orientation) using data measurements from PMD camera.

Title:

Urban Remote Sensing and Energy Planning - Doctoral Consortium Contribution

Abstract: Urban remote sensing is the acquisition of information about the urban environment and physical objects within urban areas through recording, measuring and interpreting electromagnetic radiation derived from contactless sensors. The potentials of urban remote sensing, its advantages and its contribution to urban planning and energy planning are discussed within this work. This paper outlines the challenges of energy planning, presents the research question, if there is a correlation between remote sensing derived parameters and energy related issues and outlines the overall objectives of the thesis “Urban Remote Sensing and Energy Planning”. Furthermore the fields of application are presented followed by a brief literature review; methodologies are specified and the expected outcome is described. Within the last section the present stage of the research is presented.

Title:

UAV Technology Integration for Remote Sensing Image Analysis

Abstract: In the last few years unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs) have achieved considerable success with an increasing number of operators. High-resolution images "on demand" are obtained by camera and multispectral sensors. Fields of application are various, from three-dimensional survey of morphological aspects of the terrain, to environmental analysis and forestry. Issues related to these new technologies include assessing the quality of the survey, assessment of accuracy and errors, image interpretation, use of information obtained from radiometric sensors. In particular the main focus of this project is to use a multilevel remote sensing framework in order to integrate information obtained through UAV images, satellite images from Sentinel I and II, radiometric analysis, and spatial information in order to derive informative maps to be used for educated decision support.

Title:

Accessibility Profiles - Measuring Vulnerability and Amendability of Transportation Network

Abstract: Potential-based Accessibility model has been extended with Accessibility Response Profile concept. AR Profile describes a response of a transportation network to changes occurring on a single link and accessibility is a measure of influence. Both vulnerability and amendability are captured with this approach. A subject of analysis may be whole network or any single node of the network. A software tool has been developed to compute AR profiles and data has been gathered. Further analytical procedures are needed.
